Mental Health: A Best Friends Point Of View

Hey everyone,

Welcome to part one of three...I am starting a new little 'series' where I will get 3 of the most important people in my life and my mental health journey to just talk a little about how it has affected them.

First of all, my best friend Ben

Ben has been my best friend for many years. We met at school, I used to go into one of the blocks and watch him play ping pong and then he would come over and make me laugh until I wanted to pee (he still does)

We have a very special friendship, I love him like a brother. I laugh, cry, smile and share all of my memories with him. He is family.

I would not have been able to get through so many things in my journey without him there to catch me on the bad days. He's been there through the highs and the lows, the eating disorder, the anxiety, the depression and the break ups. He was always there. He's been there from celebrating successes in life, to watching me breaking down because I didn't want to live when I broke up with my ex.

He has watched me in these times a lot more than my other friends, I see him every week and share it all with him. He has experienced it first hand and has become a safe place for me.

That's the thing when you are suffering, you collect all of the  things or people which make you feel safe. It's their choice if they want to stick around - Ben has, for that reason I am so lucky.

This is Bens point of view...

"I don’t actually the remember the first time I met Shannon (she clearly doesn’t mean that much to me). I reckon it was probably in Media class in high school; whilst I was being a teacher’s pet she was probably, well, doing the same. It was only when we became really close that I began to learn about Shannon’s mental health and to tell the truth, the first time I’d learnt about mental health at all. Being a young, impressionable (nerdy) young man, I can’t really recall being aware of a thing called ‘mental health’ because I nor my parents had come into contact with it and even if they had, they wouldn’t have told me.

As my friendship grew and grew with Shannon during and after our education, she became like a sister to me. I now know everything about Shannon; what her habits are, how her mind works and unfortunately, how fucking awful her farts are. This closeness meant Shannon was much more susceptible to opening up to me and in time, I began to understand how such a crippling affliction affected pretty much everyone, including me (and if you think it hasn’t, then well, you’re lying).

On the eating disorder -

She was always obsessed with her image and was constantly concerned of what people thought when they looked at her. Personally, I think the plague of social media didn’t help and I’m sure the same goes for many young girls, and boys, of that age. I always did and still do find it frustrating when Shannon asks ‘Do my legs look massive?’ or ‘Do you think I have a big belly?’. No matter how many ‘No darling, you look fine’ one-liners I pumped out, Shannon refused to believe me, or anyone else for that matter. She’s improved a hell of a lot in that sense over the years so bloody well done to her and I hope one day she will be able to see what we all see, a beautiful woman full of life.

Selfishly (or selflessly, depending on how you look it), I have always preferred talking about Shannon’s problems compared to mine because…
1) Shannon’s problems are always real problems that affect her day to day life. My latest girl problem or aggro at work doesn’t even come close to what Shannon has to deal with on a daily basis.
2) If Shannon needs to talk to me, I want her to. I never want her to feel like she can’t open up to me.

On the 'break up' -

The break up was a bloody awful time for Shannon. The way the whole thing unravelled was heart breaking for me to watch but obviously, a living hell for Shannon. That whole time really affected her and was a big setback on her road to recovery. She thought she had everything she needed and was convinced she was set for life; I thought the same thing for a time too. However, it didn’t work out and it really broke Shannon. I tried to be there as much as I could but the damage was already done and I hope Shannon never ever has to go through anything close to that again. However there is one big positive to take from that utter shit storm. She must take solace from the fact she got through that. She was strong, resilient and dealt with everything she faced like an adult. I can definitely say I am nowhere near strong enough to get through something like that but Shannon did, and that says a lot about her as a person.

How it affects me sometimes -

Sometimes I do feel helpless. I have gone home countless times from spending time with her asking myself ‘How can I help more?’ or ‘How can Shannon fix this?’. I have always been naive enough to believe the answer is in books - hence me buying her some sort of well-being related book EVERY Christmas and birthday (Sorry Shannon). But I think the answer to this is people. Shannon has some fantastic people in her life; a loving family, supportive colleagues, caring friends and praise the lord, an awesome boyfriend. As long as these people continue to talk and support Shannon and she continues to offload her thoughts onto them, she will one day beat this. Talking about stuff is key, NEVER bottle any problem up, no matter how big or small.

To bring this poorly written, grammatically incorrect monologue to a close, I feel incredibly blessed to have Shannon in my life. I take great comfort that whatever problem we face in life, we will share it and tackle it together. I am overwhelmingly proud of Shannon. She plays herself down but deals with so much shit and just keeps on going. I know one day she will beat this, she is way stronger than she thinks.

(Now she promised she’d pay me for this interview and she ‘claims’ she sent a cheque in the post. Let this post go on record, I HAVE NOT BEEN PAID. I will be suing)."

Sometimes I forget that there are other people involved in my journey, as much as I care for others sometimes I am so absorbed in everything in my mind that I forget about my friends and family for that split second. I don't want to do that anymore. I want to listen to my family, my friends, their stories. I want to get better for me primarily but for others too, like Ben. Someone who has always put up a fight for me, for that Ben, I thank you.

Blogmas: Day Twenty Four! CHRISTMAS EVE.

Merry Christmas Eve everyone! Tomorrow is the big day, are you excited? I AM.

It's been an ace countdown, done so much festive stuff and truly feel super Christmassy and I think a lot of it was due to being away from home and doing the cute little drive home for Christmas. It was just very nice and I'm feeling good.

I spent last night with my brother and his fiancé, we had Asda pizzas and they are the best, if you've never had one like some people I've met at uni haven't then what the FRICK is going on! That is a disgrace, get down there now. I went into their bathroom and saw this…

I appreciated it more than a 19 year old should have.

Today I've been doing usual Christmas Eve stuff with my family, after going midnight grocery shopping last night I was super tired so didn't get up until it was time to go out for breakfast with my parents which was nice. We then went around all the families houses doing usual Christmas duties, dropping off presents, collecting presents (lucky us) and wishing everyone a v merry Christmas. I made pigs in blankets just now, stealing my nannies thunder oops. Then later on my brother and Chelsea are round for dinner before tomorrow, ahhhh I feel so warm and fuzzy as we're just watching The Grinch.

I can't wait to have a beauts day with my little cousin as well tomorrow! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and day 25 might have to be a bit late and come on Boxing Day depending on how busy the day is!

Have a good one!

Blogmas: Day Fifteen!

Day 15, wowweeeee that's 2 weeks worth of blog posts and I don't think they've been very good at all, haha oops.

I finally got a Christmas jumper, I am the proud owner of my first Christmas jumper, I feel like a new woman! I've never bought anything from Peacocks but this was £16 and it is quite fetching, I got a large because baggy clothes are the best.

I've had a few mentally challenging days and if my mum is reading this I'd like to say thank you for being the best, I love you lots.

Hopefully seeing some of my pals tonight which is nice, ahhhh I actually just feel really warm and happy inside because of Christmas and the fact I'm at home - don't tell anyone, but I genuinely never want to leave again. HOME RULES.

Tomorrow I'm going to go do the last of my Christmas shopping I think, or I might delay that until Wednesday and do absolutely nothing tomorrow, my life choices are extremely difficult.

How are you doing?! Let's have a chat!

Blogmas: Day Thirteen!

Currently 8 am and TODAY IS THE DAY. I'M GOING HOME. QUICK, I'm about to break out into the going home song from Radio 1. Currently listening to Driving Home For Christmas, I'm just sat in my bedroom so you know being a little bit ahead of myself but I'm just so excited!

I'm meeting my parents at the South Bank to look at the Christmas market then we're getting all my stuff and I'll be going home for 5 weeks GAH. Mums prepared a mac and cheese for me too, what a gal.

I've been listening to Michael Bubles Christmas album, I know I keep going on about Christmas (it's Blogmas, this is acceptable) but I'm so stoked this year, the past few years have just been like eh but being away I think has made me appreciate everything, life and everyone so much more. I can't wait for the day, I can't wait to buy and create the gifts I'm getting people this year, it's going to be weird and different with my brother living elsewhere for the first time but as long as I've got my mum and dad that's okay. I'll just get a cardboard cut out of my brother and pretend he's not only 5 minutes up the road.

I AM HOME, it's 6pm and I spent the day with my mum and dad going round my grandparents and stuff, saw my beautiful little cousin who I just adore! It was a nice day but now I'm in my cosy house which is basically Santas grotto right now - mum did a good job, as per.

I'm really happy to be away from high rise buildings and being able to see the sun setting again, I've honestly learnt to love things like that now, I never used to appreciate sun sets and sun rises but when I was at my lowest point mentally this year I started to love aspects of life that I never used to.

Ah well, I hope you've had an equally as nice day as me and I shall see you tomorrow!

My Tattoos & Their Meanings.

Hiiiiiii!

A few weeks ago I finally plucked up the courage to get permanent ink on my skin, you know…it's literally never coming off. For about a year and a half I'd had these tattoo ideas and after much stressing and sweating I finally got them done. For one thing, the pain is literally not bad at all and that's what I was worried about most, palms were sweaty, knees weak, arms were heavy (thank you, Eminem). But I don't think many people apart from my pals know exactly why I got what I got, so I'm going to tell you whether you like it or not, whether you really give two shits or not, YOU'RE GOING TO KNOW.

Firstly, the tattoo on the side of my wrist…

(I took these photos when it was first done, I can't seem to get a good one right now and I can't put myself through the stress of taking a good one, IT'S STRESSING ME OUT, MAN)

Okay, so I was originally going to get three generic hearts, one for my mum, one for my dad and one for my brother. Then I was like, no I want them to mean more to me than just that! So I got them all to draw a heart each, it goes my mum, dad and then my brother at the bottom. They aren't the neatest things in the world but I don't care one little bit, they drew them and I'll always have a tiny little piece of them literally on me forever and I love that! They could've turned out looking like acorns or something but they didn't, they look like hearts and that's good enough for me. I just wanted them to do something for me because my family are my life, any little thing like this just makes me feel all warm inside. Cute, I'm cute as frick.

Secondly, the tattoo on my inner forearm…

Do you recognise these lyrics? Maybe. They're from 'Beside You' by 5 Seconds of Summer. Now I didn't get this tattoo for the purpose of 5SOS, they might be my favourite band but I just wouldn't personally get a tattoo dedicated to a band. Back in January/February last year this song was the first I heard by them and immediately this lyric stuck out, I didn't really know who they were at this point so for me to immediately be like "I WANT THIS LYRIC ON MY BODY" means it must've meant a lot, right? Yes it does! 'My heart wants to come home' for me this means that wherever I am in the world my heart will always hold a special place for home, my family and everything about where I'm from. I'm leaving for University and you know I'll look down at my arm whenever I'm missing home, my heart might want to be home but I'll be living my dream, but everyone will know that home has such a special place in my heart. I must thank 5 Seconds of Summer for creating one of the most beautiful lyrics to come into my life. And I absolutely dig the font I chose, it's like a broken typewriter font and I love it so much.

I still look at my arm and I'm like wow, man, I've got two fricken cute tattoos on me forever with lovely meanings and I really love them so much.

TATTOOS RULE.
